The Future of Whiskey Is

Single Estate

Single Estate means that everything happens here.

The value of estate production is well understood in wine, but is a new development in whiskey. Estate distilling is the grain-to-glass process – growing, distilling, aging — happening in a single place. With no sourcing, it provides ultimate control and oversight. The result is a whiskey with provenance you can taste.

As one of the few single estate distilleries, Minden Mill is leading this movement and setting a new standard in American whiskey.

Master Distiller

Joe O’Sullivan

Joe O’Sullivan leads the estate distilling program at Minden Mill, overseeing every stage of production—from grain selection through fermentation, distillation, and aging. His role is focused on one outcome: ensuring the whiskey reflects its place of origin.

A longtime advocate for American whiskey, Joe has helped shape category standards through his work with the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission and the Estate Whiskey Alliance. Trained by Steve McCarthy, he brings a disciplined, forward-looking approach grounded in both tradition and technical precision.

The Estate

Where Terroir Takes Shape

Terroir is how land, climate, and season leave their mark on flavor—a concept long embraced in wine and now emerging in American whiskey.

Set in Nevada’s Carson Valley at an elevation of 4,700 feet, our estate experiences short growing seasons, intense sun, cold nights, and dramatic seasonal contrast. These conditions place natural stress on the grain, concentrating flavor and creating the raw material for more expressive whiskey before distillation ever begins.

Distillation

Precision to
Reveal Character

Minden Mill operates two distinct distilling facilities on the estate, each purpose-built for the whiskeys they produce. Every choice is made to preserve and refine the character developed in the grain

American Single Malt is distilled in hand-hammered Forsyth copper pot stills, using a thermal oil heating system that allows for deeper flavor development than steam.

Bourbon & Rye are distilled in the former creamery using a combination of a Headframe stripping still and Christian CARL pot still, emphasizing texture, balance, and structure.

The Distilling Facilities are housed in a former mill and creamery which are on the National Register of Historic Places. The buildings underwent LEED Gold Certified renovation to become Minden Mill Distilling.

Aging

Shaping Flavor Over Time

Our estate rickhouses are intentionally calibrated to guide aging rather than accelerate it.
Climate controlled environments avoid excessive evaporation and allow terroir-driven flavor to develop with balance and restraint.

American Single Malt ages in a rickhouse tied to the Speyside region of Scotland, in a variety of barrels including ex-Bourbon, new oak, and re-charred ex-wine and ex-sherry butts.

Bourbon & Rye mature in a rickhouse modeled on real-time conditions in Kentucky in new American oak with a #3 char.

“Hardship often creates the most interesting outcomes. The tough climate here is hard on plants, but that makes them taste more wild, raw, and exciting. Late frosts, hot summers, and early freezes. None of this is ideal by modern agricultural standards, but it strips our whiskey down to an uninhibited expression of the high desert.”

– Joe O’Sullivan, Master Distiller

THE RESULT

Whiskey That
Could Only Come From Here

Single Estate distilling delivers a house style defined by place. Each expression carries the character of the estate in its own way.

Minden Mill Whiskey Lineup
Single Estate isn’t a technique. It’s a new way of thinking in American whiskey. It’s a belief that origin is worth protecting & worth proving. Our work is guided by a shared philosophy, shaped by the Nevada high desert and carried forward through the decisions we make every day as a Single Estate distillery.
